Douglac CS - Midleton CBS Cross-Country challenge

Date: 9/1/08

Togher AC athletes representing their school Douglas CS, traveled to Midleton today to take on Midleton CBS in a Cross-Country challenge. Three races were held Minor, Junior and a combined Inter/Senior race. The course was flat with plenty of mud. The races were held on the course due to hold the South Munster Championships in two weeks time.

The first race of the day was the Minor race held over 1,000m. Here Gary McCarthy proved a runaway winner coming home with much in reserve. He was ably assisted by John Durcan, Billy Murphy and Rob O’ Reilly. The team however were narrowly defeated by Midleton.

The junior race over 2,000m proved to be a very exciting affair with Conor Foley stretching out the field from the start and only one Midleton athlete could stay with the pace. These two raced away from the field until the Midleton athlete eventually won by a narrow margin. Conor ran on for a super 2nd place finish and he led the team to an easy win with great back up from Ian Tobin 4th, James Kelleher 5th and Mark Seacy 6th. This team has great potential, as Midleton were Munster Schools champions in this age group last year.

The combined Inter/Senior race was held over 3,000m and again provided Douglas with another individual winner. Here Peter Hanrahan continued his strong pre Christmas form where he finished 19th in the All-Ireland u16 cross-country in the Curragh. Peter looked strong throughout the race and won easily. Mark Tobin proved what talent he has with a great 3rd place finish and all the Douglas athletes packed well with Patrick Coleman 4th, Richard Quirke 5th, Dave O’ Keeffe 6th, Brian Murray 8th, Craig Harrington 10th. Douglas easily won the team event in this race. All athletes enjoyed the day and it gave them the chance to blow off the cobwebs before the bigger races in January & February. Next up for the Douglas CS athletes is the D.C.U Schools Invitational Cross-Country event in Dublin on Wednesday 16th January. All the athletes are putting in a big effort and I would like to thank all for their commitment.
