Togher athletes competed for their colleges at the annual Inter-Varsity T&F championships recently. The event was held in perfect weather conditions at Morton stadium Santry. First into action were the 400m athletes on Friday in the heats. Kevin Walsh UCC and Ian Tivy CIT battled well but unfortunately didn’t qualify for the Saturdays final. Liam O’ Brien CIT produced an outstanding run in his heat winning in 50.35. In the final heat Kieran Ware UCC also sped to victory in a fast 49.82. Saturdays final produced two medals for Togher athletes with Kieran Ware getting the silver medal in a time of 49.26 and Liam O’ Brien bronze in 49.61. Congratulations to both athletes and their coach Frank Doherty. Stephen Lynch CIT qualified for the final of the 400m hurdles but decided not to run the final. Conor Sheehy UCC finished 4th in the triple jump with a leap of 13.41. CIT took bronze in the mens 4*400m relay with Liam O’ Brien and Ian Tivy part of the quartet. Performance of the day came in the mens 3,000m walk where Mark Dineen CIT took the silver medal in a time of 14.50. This was a superb walk from Mark with very little training done prior to the race. Tim Healy UCC also took part in the walk finishing 9th in 18.52. There was great interest in the mens team results at the post race meal, with CIT defeating UCC by 7 points much to the delight of the CIT group.
