Cork City Sports
Date: 5/7/09
Togher athletes competed at the Cork City Sports International T&F event in Cork and the National League Round in Athlone at the weekend. The annual Cork City Sports was held at a windy Mardyke track on Saturday and it proved to be a good day for the club. Performance of the day came from Robert Heffernan who finished a narrow 2nd to Mexican athlete Eder Sanchez, but had the consolation of racing to a new Irish record of 11.14 for the 3km distance. Also competing were some of Toghers junior athletes in the junior 1500m. Here Peter Hanrahan recorded a big PB running 4.07 and other good runs came from Cullen Lynch and Patrick Coleman. Craig Murphy was very disappointed with his 3000m run finishing in 8.35 and afterwards said he felt sick throughout the race. Marian Andrews was forced to drop out of the 400m after 100m of the race due to an injury.
On Sunday the combined Togher/Bandon team competed in the 2nd round of the National T&F League with several good performances. No official results are out yet but it is hoped the club has done enough to make the final in August.
