Weekend Report

Date: 5/7/08

It was another busy few days on the competition front for Togher athletes with club members competing at the National u14-u19 T&F championships in Antrim and at the BHAA 4 Mile Road Race in Carrigtwohill.

On Thursday night six Togher athletes took part in the Stryker 4 mile road race in East Cork and it proved to be a successful night for the club. Although the conditions were not conducive to fast running with torrential rain and an undulating course, all the athletes enjoyed the night. Eoin O’ Sullivan had a brilliant run finishing in 2nd place with a time of 20.45, all the more impressive considering he hasn’t over exerted himself in training of late. Donal Coakley had another good run finishing in 23.34 and he was followed closely by a great run by junior athlete Craig Harrington with 23.53. Another junior Cormac Lehane was taking part in his first ever 4 mile road race and ran very strong to finish in 24.53. Coach Steven Macklin pitched in on the night pacing junior Alex Kelly to a big new personal best with his 25.31 clocking. Alex also broke his 5km PB also during the race. Well done to all the athletes.

Also over the past two weeks a few other Togher members have been in action on the roads. At the Grandons 5 mile road race in Glanmire Fergal Tubridy finished with a good run of 29.27 and Donal Coakley had a great run with 29.41. At the annual John Bukley 5km road race held on the Marina circuit Elton Heffernan had a superb run finishing in 4th place with a time of 15.46. Eoin O’ Sullivan finished 12th in 16.20, Craig Harrington 81st in 18.44 and Alex Kelly 119th in 19.47. At the Shanagarry 5 mile road race Donal Coakley finished 24th in a time of 30.22.

On Friday Togher athletes made the long journey to Antrim for the u14-u19 T&F championships. The weather was wet and windy but everyone performed well despite the conditions. First into action on Saturday was David O’ Keeffe in the u18 boys 2000m steeplechase. Dave missed seven days of training last week with a bout of food poisoning but decided to give the race a go. He battled well to a superb 4th place finish and would most likely have medaled had he been fully healthy. On Sunday Togher athletes competed in the 800m and 3000m events. In the u17 800m Brian Murray ran a super race to equal his PB and claim the bronze medal. Congratulations also to Michael O’ Sullivan West Muskerry who ran superb to claim the silver medal. Conor O’ Brien also lined up and finished in a solid 8th place. In the u18 800m Alan O’ Brien ran well to finish 8th and Adam Kelleher came 9th. In the u16 3000m Cullen Lynch ran a good race after a full day of traveling the day before flying from Spain and driving to Antrim. Cullen came a good 10th and no doubt the experience will help him in the future. Peter Hanrahan ran a good race in the u17 3000m and was rewarded with an 8th place finish and in the u19 3000m Richard Quirke came a very good 6th. Congratulations to all the athletes on some great performances.
