Spar Mile Challenge
Date: 5/7/07
The Spar Mile Challenge took place on a windy Friday evening at the Maradyke Track. Athletes from the club were competing in two grades, the 5-6 minute grade and the 4-5 minute grade. Four young athletes, three of them under fifteen, took part in the five to six minute grade, with all of them managing to break six minutes. In what he described as his "best race ever", Alex Kelly was smack on 5:34 exactly as he predicted. John Dorgan came in six seconds later in a time of 5:40, followed by Rob O Neill in 5:48 and Andrew O Keeffe who produced a great finish to come home in 5:58.
We had seven athletes competing in the 4-5 minute grade, with the general goal being to break five minutes for the mile. Eoin O Sullivan paced the lads around and got to 800 right on time in 2:29. Patrick Coleman (4:58), Dave O Keefe (4:58) and James Fennell (4:59) maintained the pace to break the five minute mark, with Peter Hanrahan (5:02) and Craig Harrington (5:05) falling victim to the wind by just missing out on sub-five. In only his second race after a lengthy spell out of action, Alan O Brien fought well to come home in 5:20. Many thanks to Eoin who also broke five minutes while lending a hand to the lads.
An enjoyable night was had by all, and as most of the boys got personal bests, it was truly as case of "mission accomplished".
