Weekend Report
Date: 5/10/08
Togher athletes had a busy schedule this weekend competing at the Cork Cross-Country Championships in Carrigadrohid, an international Race-Walking meet in Switzerland and at the Rathfarnham 5km road race in Dublin.
Two of Toghers top juvenile walkers travelled to Switzerland with an Irish selection of race-walkers and performed very well. All-Ireland Schools champion Rob O’ Neill walked a superb race to take a fine win over the 3km distance recording a personal best time of 16.12 in the process. All-Ireland u15 champion James Kelleher also recorded a fine new personal best with a 3rd place finish in 17.47. Well done to both athletes.
In Dublin, Craig Murphy opened up his season in the Rathfarnham 5km road race. This proved to be a very elite race with all the countries top senior athletes in action. Craig ran a solid race to finish in a time of 15.01 and 1st Junior athlete home. This was a good opener to his season that he hopes, leads to a big race at the European Cross-Country championships in December.
The 1st leg of the Cork Juvenile Cross-Country Championships also took place at the weekend with the club dominating the boy’s races. Held on an undulating course in glorious sunshine all the athletes performed superbly. First into action were the u14 athletes and here team captain Eoin Bourke had a super run to take 2nd place. Billy Murphy and John Durcan also produced great runs finishing 3rd and 6th respectively. Other super runs came from Gary McCarthy, Michael McLaughlin, Brian Creagh and Sean Keating. The teams did outstanding with the ‘A’ team coming 1st, the ‘B’ team 2nd and the ‘C’ team 3rd.
The u16 squad matched their u14 counterparts with a superb 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finish in the team event. Patrick Coleman made the pace of the race fast from the start and eventually pulled away from the field to win in style. Team captain Cullen Lynch had a great run for 3rd place. Behind him Ian Tobin and Shaun Healy were having a great battle for 4th place with Shaun just winning in the sprint. This was a superb run from Ian as he is u15 next Sunday. Conor Foley was back to form with a 7th place finish and Mark Seacy finishing a solid 9th. Other stand out runs came from Andrew O’ Keeffe and David Kelly.
Togher athletes also dominated the u18 race with 8 finishing in the top 10. Peter Hanrahan had a great win from Adam Kelleher in 2nd place. Newcomer Rob O’ Shea ran a super race to take 4th place and other great runs came from captain Alan O’ Brien 6th, Sean Barry 7th, Rob long 8th, Padraig Sweeney 9th and Peter Bourke 10th.
