Weekend Report

It was a busy weekend for Togher athletes with no less than three competitions in three days. First up was the 1st leg of the South Munster Schools T&F championships held at a windy CIT track. Togher athletes were to the fore representing their schools Douglas CS, Colaiste Chriost Ri and Ballincollig Community School. In the minor boys 800m Eoin Bourke representing Douglas CS came a superb 3rd and thus qualified for the Munster schools championships. In the junior boys 800m there were two heats with the first five in each heat qualifying for the final. Douglas CS had seven athletes qualify for the 800m final and here James Kelleher came a superb 4th with Emmett Bracken 5th and Robert O’ Neill 6th. In the Inter boys 800m final Michael O’ Sullivan representing DLS Macroom won easily in 2.06. Brian Murray of Douglas CS came a super 2nd in 2.08, with Peter Hanrahan Douglas CS 3rd in 2.10. Conor O’ Brien 4th and Adam Kelleher 5th also had great races. The senior boys 800m was a great battle between the two Steven Macklin coached athletes, Ronan Duggan and Craig Murphy. With very windy conditions greeting the athletes, the opening lap was slow reached in 59 secs. Craig Murphy pushed the pace from 400m-600m before Ronan passed him and kicked for home winning in 1.58 with Craig timed at 2.00. In the senior 3000m the club had a 1, 2, 3 finish with David O’ Keeffe winning easily, Cormac Lehane 2nd and Alex Kelly 3rd.
On Sunday the 1st leg of the Cork County Juvenile T&F championships took place at CIT. Sunshine and light winds greeted the athletes and it proved to be a very successful day for the club. Togher athletes collected 11 medals in the 1500m events with three individual wins. In the u14 1500m Gary McCarthy led the whole way only to be beaten on the line for gold, with Eoin Bourke having a great run to finish 3rd. Toghers rising young star Emmett Bracken added the Cork u15 1500m title to his cross-country equivalent. Emmett simply ran away from the field leading from start to finish and recorded a big new personal best of 4.44 in the process. Andrew O’ Keeffe was just beaten for 3rd place in the final few strides. Conor Foley was best of the Togher athletes in the u16 1500m coming a good 4th with John Dorgan and Robert O’ Neill also running well. The u17 1500m was a cracking race with Peter Hanrahan narrowly taking 2nd place over Brian Murray in a time of 4.21. Both athletes recorded PB’s in the process. David O’ Keeffe continued his fine form of late taking the u18 1500m title with ease and Alan O’ Brien had a super run also for 2nd place. In the u19 1500m Togher athletes filled the first three positions with Richard Quirke taking the title and Cormac Lehane 2nd and Rob Cronin 3rd. Alex Kelly also had a great run smashing his PB in the process.
Finally on Monday the Munster Junior & u23 T&F championships were held also at CIT. First into action for the club was Tim Healy in the mens u23 5km walk. Timmy had an easy win walking away from the field early on. The mens junior & u23 combined 1500m contained four Togher athletes with Craig Murphy showing some very good early season form winning the junior 1500m in 3.59. Peter Fennell ran very well to take silver in the u23 category with Shane Coffey taking bronze. Kieran Ryan made a guest appearance having a good run also. In the u23 mens 3000m Donal Coakley had a good run and Marian Andrews had a great win in the 400m with a time of 55.44. Liam O’ Brien won the u23 400m title in a very close finish in 50.96 and also took 3rd place in the u23 200m, with Eoin Joyce 4th. Congratulations also to Ronan Duggan who won the junior 800m and Kieran Cunningham who ran well in the u23 800m.
