Munster Junior, u23 & Senior T&F championships
Date: 3/5/09
Togher athletes had another very successful day at the Munster Junior, u23 & Senior T&F championships held at a windy Cork IT track today.
First into action were our three race walkers with Robert Heffernan and Tim Healy competing in the Senior 10km race and Robert O Neill in the junior 5km race. Robert proved his recent training stint at altitude was working well when he powered away from the field walking sub 4 minute km splits. Having one eye on his Irish Record of 38.27, Robert battled the strong winds and came home a convincing winner in a time of 38.50.60 a new Munster Senior record and just outside his own national record. This augurs well for the up coming season with Roberts big aim being the World championships in Berlin in August. Tim Healy also produced a great display coming home in 2nd place in a new personal best of 48.58.45. Robert O Neill competed over 5km and produced a great race to come 2nd in 26.50.95.
Next up the club had three athletes compete in the 1500m race with Tony Kelleher in Senior category, Craig Murphy in the u23 category and Peter Hanrahan in the Junior category. All categories raced in the one race with Mark Hanrahan setting the pace from the start with Craig Murphy on his shoulder. The pace was slow at the front with 400m hit in 64 secs and 800m in 2.07 before the race finally got going with 500m to go. Craig stayed right on the leaders shoulder until Mark opened up a slight gap with 250m to go. Craig fought back down the home straight to be rewarded with a new personal best of 3.55.28 with Mark winning in 3.53. Behind Craig, Tony Kelleher was having a superb run coming home in 4.12.72 a huge new personal best and also Peter Hanrahan running a big new personal best of 4.15.16.
Liam O Brien produced a great run in the windy conditions to come 3rd in the senior 400m in a seasons best of 51.02. Craig Harrington ran very well also in the u23 2km steeplechase coming a fine 3rd. In the senior 5000m Donal Coakley produced his best ever run to record a new personal best of 16.54.
Congratulations to all the athletes on some great performances and plenty of PBs.
