AVIVA SIAB Schools International Cross-Country

Date: 29/3/09

It was a fantastic weekend for the club with three athletes Peter Hanrahan, Patrick Coleman and Ian Hartnett representing Ireland at the AVIVA SIAB Schools International Cross-Country championships in Wales.

The races were held on a very picturesque course in Bangor North Wales in windy conditions. First race of the day was the senior boys 7,000m in which the Steven Macklin coached Dan King from Donegal, came a great 8th and helped Ireland win the team title.

In the junior boys 4,500m race Togher athlete Ian Hartnett lined up in his first ever international, a proud moment for him and indeed his father Aidan who cheered from the sidelines. Ian put in a great effort throughout after missing a weeks training due to a stomach bug of late. He finished a very good 19th and was a scoring member of the Irish team who came 2nd. Ian follows in the footsteps of Craig Murphy who was the last club athlete to race in the junior event at these championships. He has a big future ahead and should be proud of his achievements over the last few months.

The club had two representatives in the inter boys 6,000m race in Peter Hanrahan and Patrick Coleman. This was a very tough race with some very talented athletes towing the line from England, Scotland and Wales. Peter produced his most impressive ever run in his Irish debut finishing a superb 15th and 3rd Irish man across the line helping the Irish team to the bronze medals. Patrick ran a solid race also to finish 25th but admitted afterwards that he didn’t feel well during the race.

Congratulations to all four athletes on some superb results and to the Irish squad as a whole who performed admirably against some top quality opposition.
