Date: 29/1/11
Togher athletes continued their fantastic start to 2011 with some superb performances at the South Munster Schools Cross-Country championships at Cork IT today. Douglas CS won 3 team titles & best overall school cup while Ian Hartnett and Peter Hanrahan had superb individual wins with James Gorton, Danny Mullins and Liam Harris taking individual silver medals also.
The South Munster Schools XC championships were held at Cork IT today in cold conditions but the course was very well layed out with firm fast running. First into action were the minor boys over 2000m and here James Gorton had a big lead for much of the race but was caught close to the finish and ended up in 2nd place. Behind James, there were other fine runs from Barry Forde 6th, Aiden De Saulles 9th and Daniel Burke 12th. The minor team won the team title also.
Liam Harris Douglas CS took the lead from the gun in the junior 3000m and led until 300m from the finish where he was passed and had to settle for 2nd place. Behind him the Douglas CS athletes were packing well with great runs from Declan O Herlihy 4th, Jamie O Connell 7th, Kevin Horan 8th and Fionn Bracken 9th. They easily won the team title.
The inter boys race was won in dominant fashion by Ian Hartnett representing Colaiste Daibheid. Ian sat in for the 1st 2 laps and then took off for a fine win and looks to be in fine form and looking forward to the All-Ireland Schools championships on March 12th. Behind Ian, Billy Murphy had a super run for 5th and with Eoin Bourke 9th, Alan Ring 12th and Fintan Cadogan 23rd the Douglas CS team finished 2nd. They were however without the services of Brendan Couch who will add a lot of strength to this team.
Finally the senior boys race over 5000m was a great head to head between Danny Mullins and Peter Hanrahan. Peter won the battle in the final few hundred metres with Danny a close 2nd. Behind them Cullen Lynch was a superb 3rd with Emmet Bracken 6th, Ian Tobin 7th, Cillian Fleming 9th, Dave Kelly 10th and Jamie Sullivan 11th. Douglas CS won the team title here.
Douglas CS received the best overall school cup for the 7th consecutive year, a remarkable achievement. Well done to all the athletes on some super performances.
