Weekend Report

Date: 28/6/09

Togher athletes had yet another busy weekend competing at the Tailteann Schools Interprovincial games in Tullamore, the British Milers Club meet in Trafford and the Dublin Grand Prix of Race Walking in Santry.

On Saturday the club had six athletes representing Douglas CS and Munster in the Tailteann Games, which act as trials for the Schools International T&F on July 18th. Our two race walkers Rob O Neill and Cillian Fleming did very well finishing 5th and 8th respectively in the 3000m event. In the 3000m Cullen Lynch ran a solid race to finish 9th and in the 1500m Peter Hanrahan had a great run to come 4th in a new PB of 4.12. Performance of the day came from Patrick Coleman in the 1500m steeplechase. Patrick came 4th in the All-Ireland championships four weeks ago but has worked hard since and it all paid off on Saturday with a superb win and a place on the Irish team. Mark Seacy also had a superb race to finish 5th in a new PB.

At the BMC meet in Manchester on Saturday night Craig Murphy continued his remarkable season with yet another PB. Craig lined up in the mens 1500m alongside 20 other athletes. The number of athletes in the race caused a lot of problems with plenty of pushing and Craig was also boxed in on several occasions. He was stuck towards the back coming through the 800m point in a slow 2.04, but then managed to move through the field and finished in a superb 3.50.2 a new PB. He finishes up his track season next Saturday at the Cork City Sports in the 3000m.

At the Dublin Grand Prix of race walking on Sunday the club had three walkers in action. Robert Heffernan has resumed full training after an ankle problem and was using the race as a blowout before a stint of training at altitude in July. Robert walked a superb race to win easily in 83 minutes and will next compete over 3km at the Cork City Sports next Saturday. Tim Healy was also in superb form recording a PB for 10km with 48.40. Robert O’ Neill was another in fine form recording a PB also with 26 mins for 5km. Exact times to be confirmed.

At the Shanagarry 5 mile road race recently Kieran Ryan was a great 15th in 28.21, with Donal Coakley having a superb run for 16th in 28.27 and Dan Weaver 28th in 29.35.

Well done to all on some outstanding performances.
