Schools Tailteann Interprovincial Games

Togher athletes competed at the Schools Tailteann Interprovincial Games today in Tullamore and produced some great performances. Weather conditions were warm and humid with a small breeze.
Robert O Neill got the day under way in the 3km race walk and finished in a great 3rd but was unfortunately disqualified afterwards, having received 3 cards. In the 400m hurdles Dave Kelly came a fine 7th and was also part of the Munster schools 4*400m relay team that came 3rd. In the 1500m steeplechase Mark Seacy had a fine run for 8th place and congratulations also to Danny Mullins on his fine win.
Finally the 1500m produced one of the finest races seen in Tullamore in this age group in many a year. This was a race to savour with Shane Fitzsimons from St. Josephs Rochfortbridge setting a strong pace from the start, closely tracked by Ruairi Finnegan from St. Eunans Letterkenny and Patrick Monaghan from St. Colmans Newry. Fitzsimons led at the bell, but 100m later it was Finnegan who charged into the lead, but did not drop his rival, who powered into the lead again with 150m to go. Finnegan dug deep and his effort again brought him into the lead and he held it to the line for a good win. His winning time of 3:54.8 was a new Tailteann record, bettering Davy Wilsons 1985 time of 3:56.9 in what was widely acclaimed as the race of the day. Ian Hartnett produced a fine run to finish 6th smashing his PB in a time of 4.09. This was a fine run for Ian considering it is only his 2nd ever track season and he is eligible again next year for the inter age group. Emmet Bracken also had a great run to produce a new PB of 4.18 for 9th place. Well done to all the athletes.
