SIAB Schools International Cross-Country Championships
Date: 27/3/11
Ian Hartnett captained the Irish team to a great 2nd place finish at the SIAB Schools International Cross-Country Championships held at a sunny Greenmount College Co. Antrim at the weekend. Ian was the 1st Irish man home in 11th place.
On a beautiful spring day in Greenmount College, Antrim the English Schools showed that in cross country running they are the dominant force in these islands when they won all four races at the annual SIAB event. However, Ireland performed with distinction also when they took the runners up spots in every race. In the Intermediate 5,500m race Ahmed Sharrif Hassan of Scotland sprinted away from England’s James McMurray in the last 100 metres to add the Intermediate Boys’ title to the junior one that he won in Truro last year. England filled the next seven places to win the team gold. The Irish team were led home by Ian Hartnett in 11th place and held off the Scottish challenge to take the silver medals. This was a superb run from Ian considering he had a throat infection all week and is taking antibiotics. No doubt fully healthy he would have been in around the top 5. It has been a great couple of months for Ian finishing 2nd at the All Ireland Schools XC championships, finishing 2nd at the Scottish Indoor 3000m championships, finishing 2nd in the u17 English AAA Indoor 1500m and winning the Scottish Indoor u17 1500m title. Ian will now focus on revising his track PB's for the outdoor season while focusing on the 3000m for the Schools campaign.
