Date: 27/2/11
Togher athletes competed at the National Senior & Junior Inter Clubs Cross-Country championships in Dublin at the weekend bringing home some team medals in the senior race and a 4th place finish in junior race. Ian Hartnett got a great silver medal at the English AAA Indoor championships and Marian Heffernan received a call up to the Irish team to compete at the European Indoor championships in Paris next weekend.
The club had a senior and junior team compete at the National Senior Inter Clubs XC Championships in Santry on Saturday. The course was fast with good ground conditions for this time of year. The junior mens race was held over 8000m and here the team came a dissapointing 4th place having had high ambitions to win. The team was without captain Peter Hanrahan and when Patrick Coleman dropped out at half way our chance of gold was gone. Danny Mullins had a superb run to finish in 6th place and behind him other great runs came from Cullen Lynch 16th, Emmet Bracken 21st, Ian Tobin 22nd, Cillian Fleming 34th and John Dorgan 43rd. The team were only 18 points off the gold medals and a mere 7 points off bronze. The senior team had 5 athletes in action and the race had about 150 athletes starting over the 12km course. Shane Coffey led the team home with a great run in 53rd place and with Donal Coakley 57th, Eoin O Sullivan 74th, Steven Macklin 77th and Pa Murphy 97th the team came a great 2nd in the 'C' category and 12th overall out of 25 teams.
Ian Hartnett continued his preparations for the All-Ireland Schools XC Championships in 2 weeks time with a 1500m at the English AAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham. It proved to be a great event for Ian as he took home a silver medal and a new PB of 4.05. The experience of competing in these championships will no doubt stand to him in the future.
There was great news for the club and Marian Heffernan as she was selected on the Irish team to compete at the European Indoor championships next weekend in Paris. marian competes in the 400m and all at the club would like to wish her the very best of luck.
