Weekend Report

Date: 26/1/09

It was another hugely successful weekend on the competition front for the club with athletes competing at the National Junior Indoor T&F Championships in Nenagh, the AAI Indoor T&F Games in Nenagh and the Lottocrosscup International Cross-Country in Hannut Belgium.

On Saturday the National Junior Indoor T&F took place in Nenagh with Robert O’ Neill representing the club in the 3000m Race Walk. Robert is only u17 but produced a fantastic performance to finish 6th in a time of 15.49. Considering Robert has 4 years left at junior level this was a superb result. Also competing in Nenagh was Michael O’ Sullivan West Muskerry AC who is coached by Togher middle distance coach Steven Macklin. Mike lined up in the junior men’s 800m in his first 800m of the indoor season. Mike timed his run to perfection taking the National title in style. Congratulations to Mike on a superb performance.

On Sunday the AAI Indoor T&F Games also took place in Nenagh with some of the clubs athletes in action. Robert Heffernan and Tim Healy both took to the start line in the men’s 5000m Race Walk. Robert was having his first walk indoor using it as some speed work for the National Senior Indoors in two weeks time. Robert walked very well and won easily in a time of 11.32. Tim Healy has an outstanding race looking strong and confident throughout. Tim finished 6th in a huge new PB of 13.40.

Three Togher athletes Patrick Coleman, Cullen Lynch, Mark Seacy, Donegal athlete Dan King and coach Steven Macklin travelled to Belgium at the weekend to take part in the Lottocrosscup International Cross-Country event in Hannut. Patrick, Cullen and Mark all lined up in the boys u18 international race. With all three running an age up it was going to be a tough race. Racing over 4,600m all three ran superb over the flat mucky terrain. Patrick produced one of his finest ever runs to finish 6th (3rd u17). Behind him Cullen Lynch was having a great run also and finished 22nd (13th u17). Mark Seacy battled well throughout and ran a great race too finishing 30th (22nd u17). This was a great display from all three and the experience will surely stand to them. Outside of the races the athletes had the opportunity to meet some of the world’s top Ethiopian and Kenyan athletes and also have dinner with them the night before the race. In the Junior men’s 6,400m race Donegal man Dan King produced another great display to follow up on his great run at the Celtic International Cross-Country last week. Dan settled into the lead group from the start with a strong pace being set by Jeroen D’Hoedt who recently finished 18th at the European Junior Cross-Country championships in December. Dan dug in well and finished a superb 4th narrowly missing out on a place on the podium.

Well done to all the Togher athletes on superb weekends racing. Next up for the clubs athletes are the South Munster Schools Cross-Country championships, which take place next Friday in Midleton CBS.
