Antrim International XC

Date: 25/1/11

It was a hugely successful weekend for the club with athletes competing at the Antrim International XC in Greenmount College and in the AAI Indoor Games & National Masters Indoor championships in Nenagh. The club won two sets of team medals in Antrim u17 & u20, Tony Kelleher won National Masters Indoor 1500m gold and Marian Heffernan won a superb double gold in Nenagh 200m & 400m with Tim Healy taking a bronze medal in the 3km walk.

At the Antrim International XC event the club had two teams in action in the u17 & u20 races and two seniors in the seniors mens race. The course was flat, firm and very fast and very well layed out. The u17 race was held over 5600m and here Ian Hartnett ran with the leaders from the gun. This was Ians 1st race back from an injury that forced him to miss the entire clubs cross-country season. It turned out to be a great first effort with Ian coming 5th and with other great runs from Billy Murphy 19th, Eoin Bourke 27th and Brendan Couch 30th the team came 3rd. In the u20 5600m race Danny Mullins had a great run for 6th place and he was followed home by superb runs from Cullen Lynch 10th, Ian Tobin 14th and Cillian Fleming 19th with the team coming a great 2nd. In the senior 9km race Steven Macklin and Patrick Murphy lined up against six Africans and a host of other top international athletes. Both athletes performed well with Steven finishing 29th and Patrick having his best run of the season coming 30th.

At Nenagh over the weekend the Masters Indoor T&F championships and the AAI Indoor Games were held. On Saturday Marian Heffernan lined up in both the 200m and 400m at the AAI Games. Marian recently spent a few weeks in Australia with husband Robert warm weather training and looked in great form recording a 200m and 400m double win. Marian won the 200m in 25.29 and the 400m in 56.51. In the 60m Ronan Foley ran very well recording an 8.11 clocking and in the mens 3km walk Tim Healy got a superb bronze medal in a time of 13.36.50.

On Sunday in Nenagh the National Masters Indoor championships were held with Tony Kelleher having a superb run in the 1500m. Tony was 2nd overall in the race but won gold in the over 40 category with a great time of 4.19. Well done Tony!!!
