Weekend Report
Date: 24/5/09
It was a hugely successful weekend for the club with Robert Heffernan finishing a superb 4th at the European Cup of Race Walking in Metz France. Held in soaring temperatures the conditions proved to be difficult for the athletes but this did not deter Robert as he walked with huge confidence and determination. He led the race through 10km in a quick 41.04 for the conditions. He battled it out with three Italian walkers and a Russian for a place on the podium, eventually finishing a great 4th in 1.25.21, an agonizing 14 seconds off 3rd place. The race was won by Italian Giorgio Rubino in 1.24.06. This was Roberts highest ever placing at a major walking event and he can now continue his preparations for the World championships in Berlin in August with the belief that he can challenge for a medal.
At the Irish Milers Club meet held at Irishtown stadium on Friday, Craig Murphy had his first run over 3000m for the season finishing 7th in 8.22.71 just two seconds off his PB. Craig is in the middle of exams at DCU right now and said afterwards that he felt very tired having had an exam that afternoon. This was a positive run considering and he will now race in the IMC 1500m at the Irish Schools championships next Saturday in Tullamore.
On the roads Shane Coffey was a fine 4th at the Cheetah run 4 mile road race held at Fota wildlife park in Cork. With 680 people taking part Shane battled well to a great 4th place in 21.50. Kieran Ryan also ran making his comeback to fitness coming 19th in 22.52.
