All Ireland Championships 2007 Leg 1

Date: 24/11/07

Togher athletes competed in the All-Ireland Cross-Country Championships held in the Curragh on Sunday. The course was relatively flat with firm ground and all the athletes enjoyed running there. It proved to be a wonderful day for the club with the u16 boys team winning the clubs first ever juvenile team title in cross-country. The six man team ran the races of their lives to take the gold medals defeating St Malachys and Ennis Track. Patrick Coleman led the team home with a superb 10th place finish, even more impressive considering he was running up an age. Patrick went home with 4 gold medals on Sunday winning gold with Cork and Munster teams also. Peter Hanrahan produced his best ever performance finishing an outstanding 19th and with other super runs from Brian Murray 30th, Conor O’ Brien 52nd, Shaun Healy 65th and Cullen Lynch 72nd Togher took the team title. Cork also came first county and Munster were first province. Congratulations to all the team who made club history on Sunday.

The u18 boys team finished 8th and Kevin Loftus was the first man home in 37th and was also a scorer on the Munster team that came 3rd. The team was without the services of Adam Kelleher and would probably have finished a few places higher. They performed very well under the circumstances with great runs from Richard Quirke, Mark Tobin, David O’ Keeffe, James Fennell, Alan O’ Brien and Robert Long. The Cork team finished just outside the medals coming 4th.

In the Junior mens race Craig Murphy settled into the leading group from the start and battled hard throughout. He ran a superb race to finish 5th but unfortunately he just missed out on making the Irish team for the European Cross-Country championships. No doubt he will bounce back and produce some big performances after Christmas. Shane Coffey ran a very strong race also and finished 29th. Craig Harrington also ran well and finished 48th. Unfortunately Cork didn’t have a full team in this race.

In the senior mens race Tadgh O’ Callaghan and Kieran Ryan competed for the club. Tadgh traveled home from Yale where he is on scholarship for the race. He produced a great run coming 26th but unfortunately Kieran had to drop out of the race due to illness. All in all it was a fantastic day for the club and the attention now switches to the 2nd leg of the All-Ireland championships in Dungarvan on December 16th. The club will have u15, u17, u19 and Novice teams running.
