Celtic International Cross-Country

Date: 24/1/10

Ian Hartnett represented Ireland at the weekend at the Celtic International Cross-Country held in the fabulous surroundings of Greenmount College Antrim and took home a superb individual bronze medal. Togher athletes also received awards at the Cork County Board international awards night last Friday.

The Celtic International Cross-Country in conjunction with the IAAF Antrim International Cross-Country event was held on a relatively flat fast course around a golf course and playing pitches. The boys u17 Celtic International race incorporated the u17 UK Cross-Challenge race so had athletes one year older than Ian in it from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Ian lined up in the boys u17 race over 5600m and produced an incredibly mature display of running, with this being his first ever race longer than 4000m. He settled into the top 20 from the start and picked his way through eventually finishing in a superb 10th place overall but 3rd in the Celtic International race. The Irish team also won the team event with Ian being the 2nd scorer. Ian now continues his preparations for the All-Ireland Schools Cross-Country championships in March with the South Munster championships next Friday. Congratulations again to Ian on a superb bronze medal.

Togher athletes were honoured last Friday at the Cork county board international awards night. Tony Kelleher, Robert Heffernan and Marian Andrew were given awards as a result of their superb international performances throughout the year. Congratulations to all.
