South Munster Schools Cross-Country
Date: 24/1/08
Togher athletes had a very successful day today at the South Munster Schools Cross-Country championships held in Midleton CBS Grounds. The course was in good condition with only a few patches of mud and so allowed for some fast running.
First into action were the senior boys racing over 5,000m, covering 5 laps of the course. Straight from the start it was a battle between Douglas CS and Midleton CBS for team honours. Douglas CS were without the services of Craig Murphy who races in Belgium on Sunday, but they showed a lot of determination in winning the team title. Richard Quirke proved to be our only individual winner of the day taking a fine win in the senior race. He was backed up well by David O’ Keeffe in 3rd, Craig Harrington in 5th and Alan O’ Brien having a super run for 6th place. Cormac Lehane running for Colaiste Chriost Ri came a very good 9th and helped his school team to 3rd place.
Next up were the minor boys racing over 1500m. Here Douglas CS had a great individual run by Gary McCarthy in 4th place and he led Douglas to the silver medals in the team competition. John Durcan had a great run to finish 13th and he was followed in by Eoin Bourke in 16th and Brian McCauliffe in 20th. This was a great team performance from the Douglas lads and this bunch look good for the future.
The junior boys race over 3,000m was another closely fought affair between Douglas CS and last years Munster schools cross-country minor boys winners Midleton CBS. The Douglas CS boys ran superbly as a team and were rewarded with the gold team medals. Conor Foley again displayed his great talent with a fine 5th place finish and James Kelleher 8th, Ian Tobin 9th and Emmett Bracken 10th ably assisted him. Others to impress were Mark Seacy 16th, John Dorgan 17th running for Ballincollig Community School, Robert O’ Neill 19th, Cillian Fleming 21st and Mark O’ Sullivan 22nd.
The inter boys team proved their undoubted ability over the 4,000m distance with no less than 8 runners finishing in the top 12 for Douglas CS. This was an outstanding performance by the team who were once again led home by the in form Peter Hanrahan in 3rd place. Mark Tobin continues to improve with every race and finished a superb 4th with Patrick Coleman having another fine run for 5th. The ever consistent Brian Murray came a great 7th and he was closely followed home by Adam Kelleher 8th, Shaun Healy 9th, Darren Walsh 11th and Conor O’ Brien 12th giving Douglas CS an easy win. The Colaiste an Spioraid Naomh pair of Rob Long 16th and Sean Barry 20th also had great runs leading their school team to 3rd place in the team event.
Congratulations to all the Togher athletes who competed today for their various schools, the performances were outstanding. Next up for these guys is the Munster Schools Cross-Country championships being held in Tramore Racecourse Waterford on Thursday 7th February.
