Weekend Report
Date: 22/12/08
Togher athletes competed at the National Race Walking championships in Santry and the Newmarket to Kanturk 5 Mile Road Race in Cork at the weekend. In Santry Robert Heffernan finished 2nd over 30km behind his training partner Francisco Fernandez of Spain. Rob was happy with his race as he led for nearly 24km and did so carrying a nagging ankle injury. Tim Healy had the misfortune of miscounting the laps and finished shortly before 18km. Rob O' Neill was having a solid walk until the 3km mark of his 3.2km race, when he was forced to stop and get sick. Rob finished a creditable 2nd and will no doubt learn from the experience.
In North Cork Craig Murphy raced one last time before taking a well earned break. He was in elite company for this 5 mile race as others to tow the line included Mark Hanrahan Leevale, Rory Chesser Ennis Track and Latvian international athlete Sandis Bralitis from West Waterford AC. Weather conditions were perfect for the race and added to this a fast course and a talented field, it was conducive to some fast running. The opening mile was very fast covered in 4.30 and Mark Hanrahan eventually began to pull away around the 2 mile mark. Mark ran on strongly to record a fine win in 22.53 breaking Noel Berkleys course record in the process. Rory finished 2nd in 23.22, with Sandis 3rd in 23.35 and Craig a very good 4th in 24.03. This was a fine run by Craig to round off a very successful 2008 year for him. He know takes a well deserved break before planning for the 2009 track season.
All at the club would like to wish athletes and coaches a very happy christmas and we look forward to a very successful 2009 for the club!!!!
