UK Cross-Challenge Cardiff
Date: 22/1/07
This trip across the water provided high’s and low’s for Togher athlete Craig Murphy and coach Steven Macklin. With the race due to be held in the wonderful surroundings of Bute Park on Sunday 21st January, both athlete and coach received food poisoning on the Saturday night after a dodgy Italian meal. With the coach suffering the worst effects (consequently spending 3 days in hospital on return to Cork), Craig managed to make it to the start line for the race. Settling in the leading group after a blistering start, Craig moved his way to the front by the half way mark. The course proved to be flat and fast with a nice loop through a forested area. Craig gradually pushed the pace on until he was away on his own with 1km to go. A massive effort by Matthew Witthey helped him to catch Craig with 200m to go. Craig put in a blistering kick and crossed the line an impressive winner. This added the Cardiff Cross-Challenge title to the Birmingham Title he won before Christmas. This certainly is a day that won’t be forgotten by both coach and athlete.
