Weekend Report
Date: 21/6/08
Last weekend was a busy one for Togher athletes with athletes competing in the Munster u14-u19 T&F in Cork, the European Cup in Portugal and an EAP meet in France.
On Saturday Marian Andrews represented Ireland at the European Cup in Portugal. Marian competed in the 400m and produced an outstanding performance finishing 3rd in 54.19 a huge new personal best. This was a super run from Marian in her first real outdoor international.
Also on Saturday, Craig Murphy competed in an EAP meet in Valbonne in the south of France. Craig took to the line in the 3000m and was seeking a fast time before the World Junior deadline on Monday 23rd. A combination of exam fatigue and a weak field didn’t help matters, but Craig ran well to finish in 3rd place having ran the whole race on his own. He ran 8.29 and will no doubt run faster when he aims to peak in mid July.
On Saturday and Sunday Togher juvenile athletes took part in the Munster u15-u19 T&F in CIT. Weather conditions were awful with wind and rain the order of the weekend. In the 1500m races Emmett Bracken was 5th in the u15 race, Patrick Coleman was 5th in the u16 race. Peter Hanrahan was 4th in the u17 race and Richard Quirke was 3rd in the u19 race. In the steeplechase u18 David O’ Keeffe had an easy win and will now fancy his chances for a medal at the All-Ireland championships. Alan O’ Brien came a fine 3rd in the u18 400m in a new personal best. Our walkers were in top form with James Kelleher winning the u15 title and Robert O’ Neill winning the u16 title. Cullen Lynch and John Dorgan ran very well in the u16 3000m finishing 4th and 5th. Peter Hanrahan had a fine win in the u17 3000m and in the u17 800m Brian Murray was 3rd and Conor O’ Brien 6th. In the u18 800m Adam Kelleher had a superb win and Alan O’ Brien was 2nd. All in all a great weekend for the athletes and they can now look forward to the first weekend of the All-Ireland championships on July 5th/6th.
