Weekend Report
Date: 20/7/08
Togher athletes had a very successful weekend competing at the BMC Grand Prix in Manchester and at the National Senior T&F championships in Santry.
On Saturday Craig Murphy headed to Trafford in Manchester to take part in his first proper 3000m race of the season. It has been a hard couple of months for Craig having recently completed his Leaving Cert exams. Craig has set PB’s over 1500m and 5000m already this season and continued in this fashion on Saturday. Lining up in the mens A 3000m Craig tried to settle into the pack and shelter from the breezy conditions. He produced a great display of running finishing 10th in a new personal best of 8.20.79. His performance was all the more impressive considering he covered the last 800m in 2.10 and the last 400m in 64 secs. This time ranks him number 5 on the European Junior rankings for 2008.
Also taking place at the weekend were the National Senior T&F championships in Santry. It proved to be a hugely successful weekend for the club with Robert Heffernan and Marian Andrews both winning national titles. On Saturday Liam O’ Brien finished 4th in his heat of the 400m in 51.30. Marian Andrews won her heat of the womens 400m with ease in 55.73. On Sunday she lined up in the 400m final looking to produce a big performance and that she did. Lining up in lane 3 Marian stormed around the track to win the title in a huge new personal best of 53.97. This was all the more impressive considering it was windy at the track.
Robert Heffernan lined up in the mens 10000m race-walk looking for a solid performance before he departs for Japan to acclimatize for Beijing. Roberts own national record of 38.47.66 has stood since 2002. Robert set off at record pace and having passed half way about 12 seconds under the record things were looking good. Robert continued to power his way around the track lap after lap, eventually lapping all his other competitors. He dug deep in the final few laps and crossed the line in a new national record of 38.27.57. This was a superb performance from Robert and he can now head to Beijing with the knowledge that he is in the best shape of his life. All at the club wish him the best of luck at the Olympics and all are proud of his achievements.
