Munster u14-u19 T&F championships

Date: 20/6/09

Togher athletes competed this weekend at the Munster u14-u19 T&F championships in Waterford and the European Team championships in Slovakia. It was a very successful weekend with many medals won and PBs set.

Day one of the u14-u19 championships in Waterford was held in glorious sunshine, although there was a strong wind all day. First into action was Alan Ring in the u14 1500m. Alan only began running last September and since then has improved with every race. He showed tremendous heart and determination to finish in 4th place having been in 8th place with 400m to go. In the u15 1500m Eric O Neill and Conor Cronin had great runs. Ian Hartnett towed the line in the u16 1500m looking to win his first Munster title on the track. He did this in style leading from start to finish winning in 4.26. Behind him Emmet Bracken had a superb run to finish 3rd in a new PB of 4.28 and Andrew O Keeffe finished a great 5th in a new PB also. Cullen Lynch had his first run in weeks having just finished exams and was a great 5th in the u17 1500m, with a great run from Jamie Sullivan also. Brian Murray made a brave effort to win in the u18 1500m but had to settle for 3rd in the end, while Peter Hanrahan had to drop out with a stomach problem. Alan O Brien added another Munster title to his collection winning the u19 1500m. Finally in the steeplechase, three Togher men towed the line for the u17 race. Here Patrick Coleman was a great 2nd, Mak Seacy a fine 3rd and John Dorgan 5th.

Day two of the event again took place in sunny conditions and the club again added more medals to the tally. First into action were the 3000m runners with Andrew O Keeffe taking a great 4th in the u16 race in a huge new PB of 10.22. In the u17 3000m Cullen Lynch also produced a great run to come 3rd in 9.52, with Mark Seacy 4th in 10.02, John Dorgan 6th in 10.24 and Jamie Sullivan 8th. Rob O Shea was a fine 2nd in the u18 3000m. In the 800m races Togher athletes were again to the fore with Alan Ring 8th in the u14 race, Eoin Bourke 4th in the u15 race and Billy Murphy 8th both with new PBs. In the u16 800m Ian Hartnett was 3rd and Patrick Coleman was 5th in the u17 race. Brian Murray ran 2.03 to place 3rd in the u18 race with Peter Hanrahan 4th with a new PB. In the u19 800m Alan O Brien was a great 2nd with a new PB also. Finally in the walks, Conor Cronin was 4th in the u15 2km race and Robert O Neill was a superb 1st in the u17 3km walk in a new PB. All in all a great weekend for the young athletes.

At the European Team championships in Slovakia Marian Andrews was a fine 4th in 54.50. This was a great run for Marian and she helped the Irish team to finish 2nd overall and thus gain promotion for next year’s event.
