BHAA Cross-Country and Munster Juvenile Uneven Ages & Novice Cross-Country championships
Date: 20/10/07
Togher athletes had a busy weekend competing in both the BHAA Cross-Country race in Dublin and the Munster Juvenile Uneven Ages & Novice Cross-Country championships in Limerick.
On Saturday two Togher athletes and coach Steven Macklin traveled to Dublin to take part in the BHAA Cross-Country race held in the grounds of Castleknock College. The race was held over 4 miles on a fairly flat course with some short steep mounds to contend with. With over 130 athletes taking part the early pace was fast. Craig Murphy settled himself at the head of affairs from the start and led the race throughout. Craig eventually broke away from a six-man group with Sean Hehir of Rathfarnham AC. At the 4km point Craig injected more pace and raced away to a fine win covering the 4-mile course in 19.51. Craig Harrington also battled hard throughout and had a great run finishing in the 30’s. Well done to both athletes.
On Sunday Togher athletes headed for Cappamore Co. Limerick for the 1st leg of the Munster Juvenile Cross-Country also incorporating the Novice & u23 races. The club had teams in the boy’s u14, u16, u18 and Novice & u23 races. First up was the u14 team competing in their first ever Munster Championships. They performed superbly taking 4th place in the team event and narrowly missing out on a team place in the All-Irelands. Emmett Bracken led the team home in 16th place, with James Kelleher a superb 18th and Ian Tobin and Andrew O’ Keeffe completed the scoring.
The u16 boy’s team produced an outstanding effort in their 3000m race. The ‘A’ team led home by Patrick Coleman in 5th place came 2nd and the ‘B’ team came 4th. Ennis Track club beat the ‘A’ team by a mere 5 points. Peter Hanrahan, Brian Murray and Conor O’ Brien were the scoring men on the ‘A’ team. Cork also won gold in the inter county race in this age group.
The u18 boys rounded off a successful day for the Togher juveniles taking 2nd & 3rd in the team event. The ‘A’ team was led home by Kevin Loftus in 8th place followed closely by Adam Kelleher in 9th, Richard Quirke in 13th, David O’ Keeffe in 14th and Mark Tobin in 15th. Cork were 2nd in the inter county event with five Togher athletes scoring on the team. Well done to all the juveniles on their great performances.
The Novice & u23 race was run over the 6000m distance and had a very large field taking part. Kieran Ryan produced a super run to lead the club home in 7th place. Others to run well were Shane Coffey, Ian Tivy, Mark Dineen, Donal Coakley, Tim Healy and Kevin Hassett. At this time the official results are unavailable but the team finished about 5th. The attention now focuses on the Cork County Senior & Junior Cross-Country championships in Carrignavar on November 3rd.
