Cork County Junior and Senior Championships
Date: 2/11/07
Athletes from Togher Athletic Club travelled to a bumpy but enjoyable course in Carrignavar for the Cork County Junior and Senior Championships.
The first race to include Togher AC athletes was the Junior Boys 6k race. Athletes from the club accounted for 9 out of the 11 on the line but competition was still intense. At the gun, four athletes plunged into the front group. At the 2k mark this begun to disintegrate, with Shane Coffey (Togher) pushing in front followed by Richard Quirke (Togher) in second. Alan O’Brien (Togher) and Donnagh Murphy (Glenbower) were forced into sixth and seventh respectively as a second group composed of Craig Harrington (Togher), James Fennell (Togher) and Denis Metcalfe (Leevale) moved forward. Eventually Craig broke away, followed later by James to take third and fourth each. Affairs stayed much the same from then to the finish until Togher boys, Rob Lon, Chris Murphy and Alex Kelly, taking up the rear of the field, came down the home straight. After a climactic sprint they took ninth, tenth and eleventh respectively.
A large group lined up for the Senior Mens race. It was all go from the gun with Alan O’Shea (Bantry) skipping into first place by a considerable gap, where he remained unchallenged until much later in the race. Kieran Ryan of Togher made a strong start, and was never far from the top in the 10k race, eventually leading the team home. Eoin O’Sullivan and Steven Macklin took considerable positions also, and had very progressive races, pushing up the field throughout the race and placing themselves well in the end. Dan Weaver and Donal Coakly also had good strong races. The team was awarded third place amongst the cream of Corks runners for their performances.
