Varsity Track & Field championships
Date: 19/4/08
The Varsity Track & Field championships were held at a windswept Irishtown stadium in Dublin at the weekend. Togher athletes performed well in this early season event despite the adverse weather conditions. On Friday several athletes were competing in the sprint heats. Ronan Foolkes CIT qualified safely for the final of the 400m hurdles with a 57.48 clocking. In the 100m Eoin Joyce UCC finished 3rd in his heat in 11.31 and also finished 4th in his 200m heat in 22.78, making the final in both events. Liam O’ Brien CIT looked very relaxed as he finished 4th in the 400m heats with a 52.33 clocking, thus gaining a place in Saturdays final. The weather on Saturday did not improve as the athletes were greeted with a biting cold wind. Roan Foolkes was the first into action finishing 5th in the 400m hurdles final in 57.89, having received lane 8. Eoin Joyce finished 5th in the 100m final in 11.31 and 6th in the 200m final in 22.59. In the distance events Shane Coffey representing UCC ran a great new personal best in the 5000m recording 16.49. Peter Fennell also representing UCC had a good run to finish 7th in the 1500m what was a slow tactical affair. The race of the day came in the mens 3000m race-walk with two Togher athletes Mark Dineen CIT and Tim Healy UCC having a real head to head battle. Timmy stalked Mark for the opening four laps before he made his move. He opened up a small gap and held this all the way to the line. Timmy came a superb 3rd with a new personal best time of 14.06 with Mark 4th in 14.13. Congratulations to all the athletes on some great early season performances.
Also at the weekend the Leevale open sports were held at the Mardyke track in calm conditions. Marian Andrews had a good day focusing on the shorter sprints to work on her speed. She came 3rd in the 100m and 3rd in the 200m. Ronan Foley also had a great run in the mens 100m and Eoin O’ Sullivan in the mens 3000m. The Togher juvenile athletes had a fine day in the 800m and 1500m events recording no less than 26 personal bests. Some great performances came from Peter Hanrahan, David O’ Keeffe, Chris Murphy, Rob Cronin, Conor O Brien in the 1500m. In the 800m Togher athletes to run well were Cullen Lynch, Eoin Bourke, Conor Foley, Gary McCarthy, and Emmett Bracken.
Togher athlete Tadgh O’ Callaghan who is on scholarship at Yale University in America, finished a fine 3rd in a Yale/Harvard track meet at the weekend. Tadgh recorded a time of 1.53.09.
Best of luck to Robert Heffernan who competes in a 10km race in Spain next Saturday and to the Douglas CS u17 team who fly out to the Czech Republic tomorrow to compete in the World Schools Cross-Country championships.
