Munster Schools & Varsity Cross-Country championships
Date: 18/2/11
Togher athletes competed at the Munster Schools & Varsity Cross-Country championships today at Cork IT and produced some outstanding displays. Douglas CS had all 4 teams minor, junior, inter and senior qualify for the All-Ireland championships and both Danny Mullins and Ian Hartnett won individual silver medals in the senior and inter races. Douglas CS also retained the best overall school cup for the 7th consecutive year.
The course at Cork IT was testing today with some mucky patches and one small climb. First into action were the minor boys over 2500m and here the Douglas CS team had a fine 3rd place finish. James Gorton led the team home in 9th place and there were other great races from Barry Forde 25th, Aidan De Saulles 31st, David Smith 33rd, Daniel Burke 34th and Alan Morgan 35th. The junior boys team were without the services of four of their top athletes due to illness/injury but performed very well to finish in 3rd place. Liam Harris led them home with a superb run for 4th place and with Declan O Herlihy 18th, Jamie O Connell 21st and Fionn Bracken 22nd the team came a great 4th.
In the inter 5000m Ian Hartnett was up against Sean Tobin of Clonmel in a great head to head battle. Sean recentley finished 3rd in the Celtic International XC u20 race and today proved too strong for Ian winning by 25 secs. Ian had a solid run and with 3 weeks left until the All-Ireland can be confident he is headed in the right direction. Behind Ian, Billy Murphy was leading the Douglas CS team home in 9th place and Eoin Bourke had a super run for 13th. Here the team took 3rd place also.
Finally in the senior boys 6000m race Shane Quinn of Waterford took the pace out hard from the start and Peter Hanrahan was the only one to go with him. Peter however suffered from the fast pace and ended up being caught by the athletes behind. Danny Mullins was an easy 2nd with Patrick Coleman 3rd, Emmet Bracken 5th, Cullen Lynch 6th, Ian Tobin 10th, Cillian Fleming 12th and Jamie Sullivan 16th. The team packed very well and even with Peter Hanrahan in 18th place, won the team title easy with 24 points. Finally in the varsity race Craig Harrington, Alan O Brien and Adam Kelleher all representing CIT ran very well to help their college to a 3rd place finish.
