National Senior Indoor Championships
Date: 18/2/07
The Odyssey arena in Belfast was the venue for the National Senior Indoor T&F Championships. Togher had 4 athletes competing in the Odyssey and all produced big performances. Marian Andrews lined up in her 400m heat on Saturday night and produced a great run winning in a time of 57.05. However, Marian felt that she did not have the training done to compete competitively in the final, so she sat it out. Kieran Ware qualified for the mens 400m B final with a time of 51.02 in his heat and in the final produced a great performance to get a bronze medal in a time of 50.26, much to the delight of his coach Frank Doherty. Robert Heffernan lined up in the mens 5k walk along side European Champion Francisco Fernandez. After a blistering start (opening 1k 3.38) Robert settled into a nice rhythm and kept in touch with ‘paco’. Paco eventually won in a new Spanish record of 18.24 and Robert battled hard in 2nd place with a season’s best time of 19.11. This was a big improvement on his 19.40 in Nenagh 4 weeks previous. Craig Murphy competed in the mens 3,000m against more experienced and older athletes. In his 1st ever indoor 3k he produced an outstanding display to finish 5th in a new personal best time of 8.39, a 7 second improvement on his previous best. Craig was just 1 sec short of winning the bronze medal, a huge performance from the talented young athlete. He now looks forward to the All-Ireland Schools Cross-Country Championships in DCU on March 3rd. View results on Athletics Ireland.com (pdf)
