Munster u10-u18 & Novice & u23 Cross-Country championships
Date: 17/10/09
Togher athletes enjoyed another hugely successful day at the Munster u10-u18 & Novice & u23 Cross-Country championships held in Dungarvan, winning team medals in the boy’s u14, u16, u18 and novice races.
In the boys u12 1000m Rory Casey produced yet another outstanding run coming 30th in his first ever Munster championships and finishing 8th Cork man to help Cork win the team gold. In the u14 race the clubs newest young athletes raced over 1500m in their first ever Munster championships and ran superb to take team bronze. They were led home by Jack O’ Mahony 15th, Liam Harris 18th, Alan Ring 22nd and Jamie O Connell 27th. Cork finished 3rd in this race.
In the u16 race Ian Hartnett had an unfortunate fall at the start of the race and began at the back. He battled his way up bravely but could not catch Sean Tobin from Clonmel, but he came a superb 2nd. Behind him the team were having a great day with 6 Togher runners finishing in the top 14 with Emmet Bracken a great 5th, Ian Tobin 7th, James Kelleher 10th, Andrew O’ Keeffe 13th and Eoin Bourke 14th. The team took the gold easily with the ‘B’ team 4th. Cork took the gold medals here.
In the u18 5000m race Patrick Coleman ran strongly to take 3rd place and other great runs came from Peter Hanrahan 4th, Mark Seacy 11th and Rob O Shea 13th. The team unfortunately lost the team title by a mere 4 points and so got the silver medals. They can however be satisfied with their performance considering they were missing a scoring man in Brian Murray who was sick and Cullen Lynch who was also not fully right having been sick during the week. No doubt they will give the All-Ireland title a real go in 5 weeks time and shoot for the 3 in a row. Cork won gold here also.
In the novice mens 6km race the team did well finishing 3rd with Kieran Ryan leading them home in 8th place and other solid runs from Shane Coffey 11th, Dan Weaver, Donal Coakley and Craig Harrington.
At the Gerry Farnham Cross-Country race in the Phoenix Park Togher athletes Eoin O Sullivan, Tony Kelleher and Peter Fennell all ran superbly and in America Craig Murphy finished 82nd at the Pre National meet in Indiana despite suffering from the flu. No doubt he will be back to full fitness for the regionals in a few weeks time.
