Dublin City University Schools invitational cross-country

Date: 16/1/08

Togher athletes traveled to Dublin for the annual Dublin City University Schools invitational cross-country event on Wednesday 16th January. Representing their school Douglas CS, the athletes had a great day in the capital with some outstanding performances. The course was flat and fast with some mucky patches to help slow things down.

First into action were the minor boys team competing over the 1500m distance. All these guys are new to running and performed admirably finishing 7th team. Gary McCarthy again led the team home with a great 23rd place finish. With about 200 athletes in the race this was a fine performance. John Durcan, Billy Murphy, Eoin Bourke, Cillian Crowley and Michael McGuinness completed the team scoring.

The junior boys race was held over 2,500m and again Douglas athletes were to the fore. Conor Foley continued his rich vein of form with a superb 18th place finish and he was followed home closely by James Kelleher 19th, Emmett Bracken 23rd and Ian Tobin 25th. This was a super team performance with 6 athletes in the top 30 and resulted in the team finishing 2nd behind a superb St Colmans team from the north of Ireland, containing the talented Monaghan twins. This team has really gelled and Mark Seacy has done a great job in his role as captain. Watch out for these guys in the coming weeks.

The inter boys team have also come together strongly as a group and this was portrayed with a super team win, defeating the mighty St Malachys college Belfast in the process. The outstanding Peter Hanrahan in 8th place led the team home again. Patrick Coleman also battled hard throughout and was rewarded with a super 10th place finish. Brian Murray and Mark Tobin (who lost both spikes during the race) completed the scoring finishing 14th and 15th respectively. This result was all the more impressive because the team’s number one athlete Adam Kelleher missed the race. All the team are fully focused on the All-Ireland Schools championships on March 8th and are hoping to produce their best form on the day.

The senior boys team were without the services of Craig Murphy and two other team members, but battled well to a 6th place finish. Richard Quirke produced his best race of the new year with a superb 17th place and he was followed closely by David O’ Keeffe 20th, Craig Harrington 33rd, Alan O’ Brien 38th and Alex Kelly 42nd. All in all some superb performances from the athletes and they now look forward to the South Munster Schools Cross-Country championships on Friday 25th January in Midleton CBS.
