DCU Schools Invitational Cross-Country
Date: 15/1/09
Togher athletes travelled to Dublin on Wednesday for the DCU Schools Invitational Cross-Country event. It proved to be a very successful day for the club with athletes taking an individual gold, two individual silvers and a team gold. The course was flat and fast with mucky patches. First up were the Minor boys racing over 1500m. Here Togher athletes representing their school Douglas CS were competing for the first time. The team did very well and were led home by Brendan Couch in 34th place with 180 athletes in the race. Others to run well were Alan Ring, Shane Kelly and Paul Lehane.
The junior boys race over 2000m proved to be very successful for the club with Ian Hartnett producing an outstanding run to finish 2nd. Ian only took up running last September and has gone from strength to strength since. Behind Ian, Billy Murphy was having a superb run and led the Douglas CS team to a 4th place finish in the team event. Others to run well were Eoin Bourke, Michael McLaughlin and Sean Keating.
Peter Hanrahan and Patrick Coleman set a strong pace from the start in the Inter boys 3000m race and soon found themselves out on their own. Peter proved the stronger running away well to take the win. Patrick was a super 2nd and with Cullen Lynch 7th and Mark Seacy 12th Douglas CS easily won the team title.
In the Senior boys race Adam Kelleher was first home in a great 9th and Alan O' Brien and Craig Harrington also ran well. Well done to all athletes on a superb start to the Schools Cross-Country season.
On Friday night at 8pm in the Vienna Woods Hotel in Glanmire, several of the clubs athletes will receive awards from the Cork County Board. The annual Cork AAI awards night takes place and Robert Heffernan, Marian Andrews and Craig Murphy all receive awards.
Best of luck also to those competing in the Munster Senior & Junior Cross-Country championships on Sunday in Waterford.
