Weekend Report

Date: 13/7/08

Togher athletes had a busy weekend competing at the Cork City Sports held at the Mardyke, the Flanders Cup meet in Belgium and the All-Ireland u14-u19 T&F championships held in Tullamore. At the Cork City Sports on Saturday Marian Andrews competed in the womens 400m. Marian had spent the previous day traveling from the high altitude base of Font Romeu, and the return to sea level added to the traveling took a lot of energy from her. She finished in 8th place in 55.00 and would have no doubt run a lot faster if she were fresh. Also competing at the city sports were some of the clubs junior 1500m runners. Peter Hanrahan led the club home in 8th place and others to run well were Richard Quirke, Brian Murray, Alan O’ Brien and Craig Harrington.

Craig Murphy competed in Gent Belgium in one of the Flanders Cup meets. The event was a bit unorganized with the race fields not announced until 40 minutes before the race. Craig had to make a last minute switch to the 1500m as a result of the 3000m A race being to quick and the B race being to slow. There was a 16 man field and Craig found himself boxed in after a slow 64 sec first lap. Things went from bad to worse when he reached 800m in 2.10. Craig eventually got out of the pack and battled well to a 3rd place finish in 3.58. This was a new PB despite the slow pace. Congratulations also to Ronan Duggan Bandon who won his 800m race (again another slow race with the field going through 400m in 58 secs) and Michael O’ Sullivan West Muskerry who ran a new PB of 1.59 in his 800m.

The last day of the All-Ireland u14-u19 T&F championships were held in Tullamore in pleasant conditions. The clubs race-walkers were out in force and it proved to be a very successful day. James Kelleher competing in his first ever All-Ireland club championships produced an outstanding display to win the boys u15 2km walk in 10.46.58. James received no cards throughout the race and was delighted with his race. All-Ireland schools junior champion Robert O’ Neill took to the line in the u16 boys 3km walk seeking another big performance. Robert has been sick over the past two weeks and missed a lot of training. Robert however displayed a lot of determination and battled his way to a superb bronze medal in 16.39.95. Both athletes have been selected to represent Ireland at an international race-walking event to be held in Switzerland in early October. Congratulations to both athletes on their superb performances
