Cork County Championships Odds and Intermediates

Date: 13/10/07

Togher athletes competed today at the 2nd leg of the Cork County Cross-Country championships in Youghal on a well laid out course. First up were the mens Intermediate team racing over 7000m. Steven Macklin settled into the front group from the start and was never to far away from the leaders. He ran superbly to win the County Intermediate title with Elton Heffernan a very good 7th, Ian Tivy a super 10th and Donal Coakley completing the scoring in 19th. That was enough to give Togher the team title. Toghers new recruits took to the line in the boy’s u13 race and ran very well. Gary McCarthy led the team home in 12th place, with Michael McGuinness 20th, Cillian Crowley 24th and Daniel Leahy 27th. The team finished in 4th place a great achievement considering it was there first ever race.

The boy’s u15 race was held over 2000m and again Togher were to the fore with some superb displays. Patrick Coleman bounced back from a below par performance last weekend to record a fine win. Shaun Healy in 4th, Robbie Kidney in 7th and James Kelleher in 8th ably assisted him. This was enough for them to win the team event and the ‘B’ team also came 3rd led by Mark O’ Sullivan, John Dorgan, Mark Seacy and Rob O’ Neill. The boy’s u17 team is really coming together nicely and perhaps may challenge for team medals at the All-Irelands on December 16th. Here Togher had seven athletes in the top 10 and the ‘A’ team were 1st and the ‘B’ team were 2nd. They were led home by Adam Kelleher in 4th place and others to run well were Peter Hanrahan, David O’ Keeffe, Mark Tobin and Michael Carroll. Good to see Mark Tobin and Michael Carroll back and running so well.

The final race of the day was the u19 boys 6000m. Here Craig Murphy was having his first run out of the season and what race he had. He destroyed the field and looked very strong in the process. Richard Quirke had a super run to come 4th and with Craig Harrington 6th and James Fennell 7th Togher easily won the team event. All in all a fantastic day again for the club and it augurs well for the season ahead. The attention now switches to the 1st Leg of the Munster Juvenile & Novice Cross-Country Championships next Sunday 21st October in Limerick. This will see the club field full teams in the u14, u16, u18, u23 & Novice races. Best of luck to all competing!!!
