Weekend Report

Togher athletes had another busy weekend on the competition front with the 2nd legs of the South Munster Schools T&F & Cork u14-u19 T&F championships taking place, the AAI games in Dublin and Robert Heffernan competing in the World Cup of Race-Walking in Russia.
Robert Heffernan lined up in the mens 20km race at the 23rd edition of the World Race Walking Cup held in Cheboksary Russia hoping for a solid race in preparation for this summers Olympic Games. Not only did Robert produce one of the best races of his life but he also broke the 80 minute barrier and set a new Irish record in the process. Robert finished a superb 9th in 1.19.22 with race splits: 5km- 20.16, 10km- 39.53, 15km- 59.30. This was a super performance from Robert and now he can concentrate his efforts on an even bigger performance in Beijing in August. Congratulations Robert from all at the club. The race incedently, was won by Roberts training partner Francisco Fernandez in 1.18.15.
On Saturday the AAI Games took place at Irishtown stadium in Dublin. Roberts’s fiancée Marian Andrews lined up in her main event the 400m having recently set a new personal best in the Munster championships last Monday. Marian turned in another top performance winning easily in another personal best time of 55.15, feeling that there is more to come later in the season. Liam O’ Brien also lined up in the mens 400m and came a good 3rd.
Also on Saturday the 2nd leg of the South Munster schools T&F championships took place in CIT. Togher athletes had a very successful day representing Douglas CS, Ballincollig Community school and Colaiste Chriost Ri. In the Junior boys 200m Samuel Oladunjoye came a very good 4th. In the junior boys race walking event Rob O’ Neill had a fine win, with James Kelleher 2nd and John Dorgan 3rd. Peter Hanrahan won the boys u16 mile with ease and Cullen Lynch was a great 2nd. In the 400m Shaun Healy won the inter boys race and Alan O’ Brien was 4th in the senior race. David O’ Keefe had a fine win in the senior boys 2km steeplechase running solo the whole way. In The 1500m’s Douglas CS continued their impressive form with Emmett Bracken coming 3rd in the junior boys race and James Kelleher 4th. In the inter race Michael O’ Sullivan had a fine win and Conor O’ Brien was 3rd. The senior race was a two man show with Craig Murphy and Ronan Duggan running away from the field. Craig was using the race as a trial run for an up coming 3000m race. He aimed to run around 4.10 on his own at the front feeling comfortable and achieved this feat. Ronan won the race in 4.10 a new personal best for him. Richard Quirke took 3rd in a new personal best also and Cormac Lehane, Rob Cronin and Alex Kelly all had great runs. Final events of the day were the relays and here Douglas CS came 2nd in both the minor & junior races and Colaiste Chriost Ri 1st in the minor, junior and senior races. Douglas CS won the Inter boys, Senior Boys and best overall schools cups to round off a very successful championship for them.
The weekend’s action rounded off on Sunday with the 2nd leg of the Cork u14-u19 T&F taking place at CIT. It proved to be a hugely successful day for the clubs younger athletes taking home nineteen medals in the distance events. In the 800m races Togher athletes were to the fore with Gary McCarthy coming 3rd u14 and Eoin Bourke a fine 4th. Emmett Bracken continued his recent winning streak taking the u15 title in a new personal best time and Ian Tobin having a super run for 2nd place also recording a PB. In the u16 race Conor Foley had a great run for 4th in a new PB with David Kelly 5th. Brian Murray ran the u17 800m from the front gun to tape and ran a huge new PB recording a time of 2.02. Conor O’ Brien came 2nd in a new PB and Peter Hanrahan 3rd also a new PB. Alan O’ Brien won the u18 800m in a new PB and Rob Long took a fine 2nd. The u19 800m was won by Richard Quirke with Rob Twomey taking a great 2nd in a new PB. With the 800m now complete it was the turn of the 3000m athletes. Here Togher athletes again dominated with Cullen Lynch taking bronze in the u16 race. John Dorgan, Mark Seacy, Rob O’ Neill and Jamie Sullivan all ran very well also recording PB’s in the process. In the u18 3000m Dave O’ Keeffe was a runaway winner recording a new PB also and Chris Murphy ran well to take 2nd. Togher filled the first 3 positions in the u19 3000m with Cormac Lehane taking his first ever County title, Rob Cronin 2nd and Alex Kelly 3rd. In the u16 race walk Robert O’ Neill took the gold medal and in the u16 100m Samuel Oladunjoye took bronze having a fine race. Congratulations to all the athletes on some superb performances and lots of personal bests.
Congratulations also to Elton Heffernan who has been in terrific form on the roads of late. Last week Elton won the ‘Stride by the Tide’ beach run over 4 miles in 22.14. Donal Coakley also ran very well to come 13th in 24.31. Two days later Elton finished 4th in the Midleton 5 mile road race in 26.34 and on Thursday last finished 3rd on the BHAA 6 mile road race in Ringaskiddy. Elton was timed at 32.38 on the tough undulating course. On Friday night Peter Fennell took part in the Rising Sun 1 mile road race in Ballinhassig and finished a fine 2nd in 4.40. Peter is in great form of late having taken silver in the Munster u23 1500m this week also.
