All-Ireland Schools T&F championships

Date: 1/6/09

Togher athletes had a busy weekend competing at the All-Ireland Schools T&F championships in Tullamore, the Bedford International games in England and the Ballyandreen 5 mile road race in Cork.

With glorious sunshine all weekend conditions were ideal for competition. Once again Tullamore served up a feast of athletics on Saturday for the schools championships. First into action were our race walkers in the inter boys 2km race and here Rob O’ Neill was unfortunately disqualified 20m from the finish line, while Cillian Fleming finished in 8th place. In the inter boys 1500m steeplechase Patrick Coleman ran a superb race to finish 4th narrowly missing out on a medal but ran a PB in the process. In the senior boys 800m Brian Murray found the early blistering pace too much to handle and finished in 9th place. The inter 3000m was also very fast from the start and Peter Hanrahan was in 4th place until 1600m where he began to drift and eventually finished 7th. In the junior 1500m Ian Hartnett came a solid 6th place after being sick over night in the hotel. He was disappointed with his run but no doubt he will bounce back in the coming weeks. In the u16 mile Emmet Bracken had a good run to finish 7th in a new PB, with Ian Tobin a solid 8th. Rob O’ Shea battled well in the senior 5000m and finished in 8th place. The performance of the day came from Craig Murphy in the Irish Milers Club 1500m. Craig stood on the same track exactly one year ago and trailed in, in the senior boys 1500m, in 4th place and was inconsolable afterwards. A year later he was towing the line to make up for that performance and that he certainly did. Craig had a mighty battle with John Coghlan down the home straight and finished 3rd in a huge new PB of 3.50 behind winner Mark Christie.

Marian Andrews opened up her season at the Bedford International Games in her favored 400m event. Conditions were not ideal with strong winds but this did not deter Marian as she raced to an impressive victory in 54.41. This was a great start to her season and augers well for the coming months.

On the roads Donal Coakley and Kieran Ryan took part in the Ballyandreen 5 mile road race, the first in a four part series in Ballycotton. Kieran is just getting back to fitness after a lengthy lay off and finished in 11th place in 28.32. Donal also had a good run finishing 15th in 29.14. The club also had two relay teams compete in the Cork City Marathon but no results are available at present.
