Mahon 5k Road Race
Date: 1/3/09
It was quiet weekend on the competition front for the club with athletes competing only at the BHAA 5km road race in Cork. Togher had 8 athletes taking part in the race which started in Mahon and ran along the old railway line. The 300 athletes on the start line were greeted with a strong enough wind along the water stretches and up the finishing 1km straight. Craig Murphy made his return to competitive action with an emphatic win in a time of 15.41, defeating Polish 2.26 Longford Marathon winner Wielslaw Sosnoski in the process. Craig has been hampered by a knee problem of late and was testing out the knee on orders from the physio. Craig used the race as a good steady effort and was happy with his run leading from gun to tape. Behind Craig, Eoin 'Bunky' O' Sullivan was having a fine run coming 6th in 16.18 and just behind him Elton Heffernan had a superb run clocking 16.22 for 7th place. Shane Coffey was next in for the club coming 16th in 17.10 and other fine runs came from Peter Fennell 21st 17.40, Donal Coakley 23rd 17.42, John Dorgan 49th 19.19 and Sean Barry 19.21. Congratulations also to two Steven Macklin coached athletes, Michael O' Sullivan West Muskerry AC who ran a big PB finishing 9th in 16.47 and Ronan Duggan Bandon AC who finished 12th in 16.54.
Next weekend sees Marian Andrews compete at the European Indoor T&F championships in Turin which will be shown on RTE TV and the juvenile athletes compete at the All-Ireland Schools Cross-Country championships in the University of Ulster Jordanstown. Douglas CS will have 3 very strong teams going in the Junior, Inter and Senior boys races and Ian Hartnett flies the flag for Colaiste Daibhead in the junior boys race. Best of luck to all.
