Weekend Report

Date: 1/12/08

Race walking star Francisco Javier Fernandez of Spain and Polish legend Robert Korzeniowski will be attending the National 30km race walking championships in Dublin on December 20th. Togher's Robert Heffernan lines up in the 30km event and will surely be looking for a solid performance under the watchful eye of his coach Korzeniowski. Robert is away at present training at altitude with Fernandez and will take in a key 10km race in Spain this weekend.

Last Friday 45 athletes from the club took part in a Mile Challenge at the Mardyke track. Held in extreme cold, conditions were not ideal for fast times. The athletes were using the race as a warm up for the 2nd leg of the National Cross-Country championships being held next Sunday in Cavan. There were some outstanding performances with Mark O' Sullivan winning the 'B' race in 5.28, Rob O' Neill 2nd 5.29 and Evan Mullins 3rd 5.30. A special congratulations to Jamie Sullivan who has improved from 8.10 in Nov 2006 to 5.40 in Nov 2008, well done Jamie. There were 24 athletes in the race and all ran new personal bests. The 'A' race contained 21 athletes and all were under 5.25. Brian Murray proved to be the strongest winning in 4.43 with Patrick Coleman 2nd 4.49 and Peter Hanrahan 3rd 4.52. Every athlete ran a new personal best except three. Well done to all on some outstanding running. The athletes now look forward to the All-Ireland championships next Sunday with the club sending 3 very strong teams u15, u17 and u19. Best of luck to all those competing.

On Sunday last Tony Kelleher took part in the Munster Masters Cross-Country championships in Killeagh Co. Cork. On a freezing cold day, Tony ran a superb race to finish in 3rd, a fantastic achievement. Tony was 2nd in the over 35 category and helped Cork take the gold medals in the inter county contest. Well done Tony!!!
